North America: further growth in export of pellets to Europe

North American shipments of wood pellets over the Atlantic continued to go up in the 2Q/13 with volumes more than double those in the 2Q/11. Shipments to the major consumer in Europe, the United Kingdom, are likely to decline in the coming year because of the closure of a major biomass plant in the UK.

Pellet export volumes from North America to Europe continued to rise during the 2Q/13, representing steady growth for the past seven quarters, according to data compiled by WRI and reported in the North American Wood Fiber Review (NAWFR). In that period of time, volumes exported to Europe have more than doubled, from just over 500,000 tons in the 3Q/11 to over 1.1 million tons in the 2Q/13.

Most of the increase in exports over the past two years has been from the US South, while exports from the other major supply region, British Columbia, have been growing at a fairly modest rate since early 2011.

In the 2Q/13, pellet volumes exported from Canada were nearly static from the previous quarter, which was a reflection of a pellet producing sector running at close to full operating rate and with limited investment in new capacity planned for the past few years. With additional capacity in British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia, pellet exports from Canada will probably expand significantly in the coming year. To date, Canada’s share of the total exports from North America accounted for 38% in the 2Q/13, which was down substantially from 62% just two years ago.

In the US South, pellet export volumes in the 2Q/13 increased 16% from the previous quarter to just over 700,000 tons. In the second half of 2013, pellet trade data will also reflect additional shipments from US Gulf Coast ports in Texas and Alabama, because new plants have started their commercial operations in the 3Q/13, as reported in the NAWFR.

The United Kingdom has emerged as the major importer of pellets exported from North America. However, pellet shipments from North America into the UK likely peaked in the 2Q/13 for this year, as RWE’s major biomass power plant in Tilbury shut down in August 2013.

Power plants utilizing pellets in the UK are still on track to increase their volumes consumed over the next several years, but the ramp-up may not continue as smoothly as has been seen in the past two years.

European Rapeseed Market Growth in Season 2013/2014

In season 2013/2014 the EU market rapeseed supply will increase by 2.6% or up to 25.5 million tonnes, Foundation of Assistance Programmes for Agriculture (FAPA) reports.

Such increase in the rapeseed supply on the European market this season is caused by increased rapeseed production rates along with a small decrease in import volumes. The growth of the rapeseed reserves effects the market as well. Total rapeseed reserves in summer 2014 will sum up to 1.25 million tonnes.

Despite the expected decline in the rapeseed exports volume in the EU countries (by about 3 %), its level will remain high – about 3.3 million tonnes.

The experts of Ukrainian Biofuel Portal pellets-wood.com consider the Ukrainian rapeseed to be of great importance on the European market.

In 2013 the Ukrainian rapeseed import significantly increased from 1.3 million tonnes up to 2.4 million tonnes. Currently the EU is a major exporter of Ukrainian rapeseed. In season 2013/2014 the total rapeseed import from the CIS countries is expected to amount to 1.9 million tonnes. Most of the rapeseed will be imported from Ukraine.

Another high volume rapeseed importer to the EU is Australia, with the rapeseed import volume of about 1.1 million tonnes this season, compared to 2.1 million tonnes last season. The smallest rapeseed quantity will be shipped from Canada – about 0.2 million tonnes.

Besides, the rapeseed export from the EU countries is expected to grow as well. In season 2013/2014 the export will come up to 250-300 thousand tonnes compared to last season 80 thousand tonnes. Previously, especially in season 2002/2003, the rapeseed export level in the EU was relatively low due to high domestic demand caused by high demand for biofuels.

According to the experts during the current season, which lasts from July 2013 until June 2014 , the volume of rapeseed processing in 27 EU countries will reach the level of 22.7 million tonnes, that is 0.1 % higher compared to the last season.

Bioenergy - Pellet Continental

Wood pellets represented a 6.9% share of the heat source of the residential buildings in 2013.

Prices in the industrial pellet markets have remained rather unchanged. The extreme weather conditions in North America have not been showing in the prices of industrial pellets in Europe, although pellet producers have been facing problems in their operations and supply.

Consolidation is going on in the Nordic pellet business as Neova (a subsidiary of the Finnish Vapo Group) and Swedish Lantmännen Agroenergi are merging their wood pellet businesses to create Sweden’s leading company in wood pellet solutions. New capacity will be coming on stream in South-Eastern Estonia where As Granuul Invest is about to start building a 250 000 tpa pellet plant.

Winter has continued mild also in February in central and northern Europe. Pellet warehouses have been full and traders have been eager to lower the inventory levels before the end of the heating season. The PIX Pellet Continental Europe (medium scale use) benchmark went down 42 cents, or by 0.16%, closing at 255.03 EUR/ton. This is 4.9% higher than at the same time a year ago.

First Milk cancel August price cuts

First Milk has withdrawn plans to reduce the milk price it pays to farmers in its liquid and balancing pools from 1 August. First Milk's chief executive Kate Allum commented,

"While we have still to complete discussions with our liquid processor customers, we have a responsibility to our farmers to show leadership in this situation and remove any uncertainty. On that basis, we have decided to immediately withdraw the planned August price cuts that were put in place as a result of moves by our liquid customers."

"This has been a turbulent time for the whole industry, but unless we immediately grasp the nettle, the progress we are seeing right now will be short-lived."

"Dairy farmers have spoken with one voice over the last few weeks, and they've made it clear that they reject the existing model where they are price takers and favour working together to gain an equal seat at the negotiating table. It is therefore critical that the whole dairy supply chain now looks to develop better structures and relationships for the short, medium and long term."

Germany: Pellet Prices in November 2011

According to surveys by the German Fuelwood and Pellet Association (DEPV), average price for wood pellets in November amounted to ? 235.99 per tonne (t).

Compared with the previous month, this is a seasonal slight increase of 1.4 percent. Thus a kilowatt hour of heat from pellets costs 4.81 cents, a kilogram of the small pellets are 0.24 EUR.

This means that heating with pellets is currently 44 percent cheaper than heating with oil and about 30 percent cheaper compared to domestic gas.
